The new and IMPROVED Victory Brewery Restaurant and Pub

null

Three cheers for Victory!!!

The restaurant is finally complete (on time too) and the timing could not be better! Unnecessary to say the beer is… we all know how tasty and really well made it is….but the food, now that another story…..I have been stating numerous times to friends and family that the old Victory pub and restaurant tasted and felt like a blown-up version of the Moose Lodge or an FOP hall. Now you enter a real, honest to Jesus, restaurant with lots of attentive wait staff and plenty of tables. The décor is modern brewery sheik; they took old brew kettles lids and buffed the copper plates to provide a perfect brewery ambiance - charming and nostalgic…kudos to their interior design.
Now, the important part - the food. Needless it has improved. How improved? Burgers were cooked to exact specs, ingredients tasted fresh and the pizza did not taste like it did in high school (well it kinda still did, but trust me it was like prep school not South Philadelphia High). Anyway, give Victory a shot for dinner or lunch sometime real soon, it is worth your hunger and that is a real statement.

Victory’s Whirlwind Witbier

null

My last review of this beer over a year ago closed out with the following comment:

“It is a solid beer and nice addition to the Victory lineup; like an 8-8 football season.”

Well, chalk this one in the Wild Card position for the playoffs. A much improved Whirlwind Wit was tasted recently by yours truly. Before this recent tasting, this beer’s taste of yeasty, citrus, somewhat spicy goodness practically vanished in the back of your throat. An improved version has been created and is available at Victory’s excellent new brewpub.
There is still a fading, yielding taste that cascades down your throat, but (believe me) there is a more noticeable taste of the Belgian yeast and citrus carbonation slowly hitting your taste buds… Well done.

Victory’s Wild Devil

Very surprised and impressed with this Belgian wild yeast version of a IPA or Belgian style ale or whatever…beer style classifications are beginning to get exceedingly indistinct in today’s beer world, but regardless this is a complex and delicious beer. It reminds me of Belgian yeast thrown in a Hop Wallop. My friend Dana has not tried some of the Belgian ales like Duvel, but this might be just the right introduction she needs.

The onslaught of the Belgian Whites…

For some time now large production breweries, such as Molson Coors, have been trying to tap (no pun intended) into the premium beer market. Although some have tried to purchase the smaller breweries, most have tried producing their own. One style particularly is the Belgian White or Wit.
“Witbier” or White ale is usually wheat, top-fermented beer. It gets its name from the use of suspended yeast and wheat proteins which cause the beer to look cloudy, or white, while chilly. Witbiers are flavored by means of a intermingling of spices like coriander, orange, and - of course - hops. The flavor is consequently only somewhat “hoppish,” and is incredibly refreshing in the summer.
Major producers have picked up on this refreshing style and its burgeoning female fanbase. They in turn have constructed their versions. Some examples are Molson Coors’ Blue Moon and S.A.B.Miller’s Leinenkugel Summer Wheat (Miller has a controlling interest the regional brewer from Chippewa Falls, WI) It is worth noting that seeing and tasting wheat beers from the same producers of Natural Light and MGD is really refreshing.

I recommend the Leinenkugel Summer Wheat - An notable orange taste, slightly sweet - no, it’s much sweeter and less yeasty than the traditional Hoegardeen.

Dock Street Rye IPA

Found this little gem at the Standard Tap in NoLib….Lots of hoppy depth for your palate. Pours dark amber and has some light citrus notes. I must acclaim the brewers for a really good mix of Simcoe and Amarillo hops. It just goes to show that a powerful ingredient like Simcoe hops can be blended to make something other than a knock your socks off IPA. The nice mix of hops gives it a very dry and refreshing taste….my kind of beer! Very impressed with the folks at revamped Dock St., well done!

Leffe Brune

Leffe Brune pours deep brown in a goblet. It is quite easy drinking and full flavored, but not too sweet; balanced with a captial B. A nice “dessert” beer without being overtly candy-like.
I believe brown and scotch ale fans would like this….a very nice intro in Belgians for the newbies. This is one example of why Belgian beers are some of my favorites!
